While many of their employees are victims of Covid-19, many slaughterhouses are closing their doors and the meat shelves of supermarkets remain desperately empty. One third of the pork and 14% of the beef slaughter capacity in the United States was unused. The correlation between industrial meat slaughter and coronavirus is making its way into the minds of consumers. The misfortune of the slaughterhouses is making the producers of protein-based vegetable meat happy. The all-category champion of alternative meats, Beyond Meat, saw its stock climb 49% last month. By mid-April, sales of these alternative meats were double those of the same period in 2019.
