Comprendre les enjeux de l'agriculture

Despite the rise in food costs and the decline in purchasing power, the avocado market continues to experience higher demand than supply. Kenya, South Africa, Israel, Peru, Chile, and Spain are the main exporters to Europe, while Mexico directs its production towards the American market.

Increasingly consumed in Asia, avocados represent an interesting economic opportunity for South African producers who will begin their exports to Japan from June onwards. During the last campaign, South African avocados were well exported, taking advantage of the shortcomings of other exporting countries affected by floods.

According to the General Manager of the South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA), South Africa has initiated the necessary registrations and inspections to access the Japanese market. The country is waiting for its avocados to reach a sufficient level of maturity to meet the protocol, including storage at 2°C for about twenty days.

Asia is a new market to explore. For example, in 2022, Japan imported 50,000 tons of avocados.
