Comprendre les enjeux de l'agriculture

The cow population, vital for economies and food security in Africa, is dwindling. The reduction of grazing lands and water sources, coupled with a three-year drought in the region, has led to the death of 80% of livestock in northern Kenya, devastating many families’ livelihoods.

Millions of Africans are being forced to adapt to climate change and drought. A government program in which 4,000 camels, bought for $600 each at the Somali border, were distributed in Samburu County, exemplifies this shift. This program reflects a decades-long transition toward camel farming, as camels are increasingly valued for their resilience to harsh climates. Indeed, the global camel population has doubled in 20 years, partly due to their superior milk production during crises compared to cows.
