The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched an Emergency Response and Early Recovery Plan (EERRP) 2025-2026, designed to help more than half a million vulnerable people in Ukraine restore agricultural production, protect livelihoods and build long-term resilience, FAO reported in April 2025 on its website.
According to the World Bank’s Fourth Rapid Assessment of Damage and Needs (February 2022-December 2024), the total damage and loss in the sector is estimated at nearly $84 billion, with an additional $1.6 billion in the irrigation sector alone. Damage includes the destruction of storage facilities, fisheries, aquaculture systems and perennial crops, as well as the forced slaughter of livestock. They also cover the destruction and theft of machinery and equipment, as well as the theft of inputs and harvested products. At the same time, Ukraine is facing one of the world’s most serious contamination crises. As of December 2024, more than 138,000 km² of land and 14,000 km² of water remain at risk from explosive remnants of war and landmines, posing an ongoing threat to agriculture and food security.
