At the bottom of the ranking, aquaculture feed production increased by 9.1% in Africa (1.7 million tonnes) while that for the pig industry contracted by 5.8% to 2.8 million tonnes. Overall, according to Alltech, 40 new animal feed plants were installed on the African continent in 2024, bringing their total number to 2,228 units.
Cuts to USAID programs, including initiatives for clean cooking solutions in Africa, have severely affected efforts to reduce air pollution, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions. Local businesses and projects now rely on carbon markets and other sources of financing, but these alternatives are slow and uncertain, making it difficult to achieve universal access to clean cooking solutions by 2030. The Trump administration has canceled 80 percent of USAID’s programs, ending clean cookstove initiatives in Africa, which increases air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, due to charcoal cooking. Local companies, such as Emerging Cooking Solutions and BioLite, are struggling to replace USAID grants, slowing efforts to deploy clean cooking solutions. Carbon markets are being explored as an alternative, but their implementation is slow and requires bilateral agreements between African countries and developed pyas. Reliance on polluting fuels persists for 1 billion Africans, requiring an annual investment of $4 billion to achieve clean cooking solutions by 2030. The methodologies used to assess the effectiveness of carbon credits for clean cookstoves are criticized for their lack of rigor.
